Sustainable Comfort. Hocheng Philippines Corporation (HCG) President Sam Chen (right) chats with ArchiNEXT 2015 winner Laredo Angelo Parasduring the recent inauguration of the Sustainable Community Comfort Area in the plaza of Brgy. Sta. Juliana, Capas, Tarlac.

The structure—which followed Paras’s winning design—was donated by HCG to the community of Brgy. Sta. Juliana, as a nod to Tarlac State University, where Paras is currently working on his degree in Architecture. The company also endeavored to improve life in the province by using the structure to promote local tourism in the area, a popular jump-off point for hikers on the way to Mount Pinatubo. Paras' design, patterned after the shape of a leaf, made use of a lot of bamboo, which is abundant locally, another criteria for the winning design.

The structure was designed under the ArchiNEXT: HCG Young Designers’ Competition, a contest in partnership with the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) and the Council of Deans and Heads of Architecture Schools in the Philippines (CODHASP), with the UAP also providing assistance in the structure’s construction. The competition aimed at unleashing the creativity of young designers in answering present-day issues, creating designs that help give comfort in the face of local problems such as lack of water and electricity.

The completion and inauguration of Paras’s masterpiece is part of HCG’s efforts to continue promoting a mindset of sustainability and creativity among the country’s future architects. This is achieved by inspiring them to be truly innovative in the field of sustainable design, with the idea that their ideas will be turned into real structures. These structures will then be constructed for the benefit of needy communities all over the country, as part of HCG’s drive to use sustainable innovation to uplift people’s lives.
